I do not know why it took me so long to figure out that taking good care of yourself can have a healing effect on body and mind. And I am not talking about taking a shower in the morning..
I am talking about really taking care of yourself. Making sure you give your body and mind the very best you can do with: nutrition, exercise, down time and sleep. This is not something they teach you in school. I have always been so busy with making sure I do the best I can. So why not do the same for your body & mind? Isn’t this silly?
I have to say that the results I am noticing are really worth it. I think that anyone can do this and it is not hard as soon as you have made it a habit or a routine. Just getting there can be difficult in the beginning because you can get so easily distracted by today’s online world.
What changes did I make?
I try to sleep at least 8 hours a night, just because my body needs that amount of sleep. If I sleep less, I will notice it immediately.
I am trying to eat as much fresh food as possible. In the supermarket I am spending more time in the veggie and fruit department and try to skip all the processed foods. During the week I try to cook as much as possible and prepare lunch and snacks to bring to work. So far, this has really been working out for me and it feels good. This doesn’t mean that I do not just eat what I want to if I go out to dinner or that I do not snack sometimes, I still do that! But I notice that when I watch my nutrition I feel and also look better. I have way more energy and do not have the afternoon energy drop that I used to have and that could result in a seizure.
I try to relax my body with showers and use creams against the pain, every day. I used to be very inconsistent with this but I notice that consistency really helps me. Also if I feel up for it, I try to do a yoga workout (mostly stretch) in the morning. This forces me to have a moment for myself and reflect on how I feel.
And lastly, maybe the most important change I have made. I try to build in some down time every day. Sometimes after super hectic days it is very hard to stop your mind but you feel that you are tired and really need it. I try to stay away from the internet and screens and read a book or draw something. This allows me to concentrate on something else and let go of all the stress and worries of that day.
In the beginning, these changes might seem easy to make but it gets more difficult when you have busy weeks. And during those busy weeks I feel that I need these habits the most. The changes that I have experienced until now have been positive enough to keep me motivated. And because I have the feeling that these habits will be beneficial to me for the rest of my life, I am trying my very best to keep up with them.
Oh and by the way, I am still seizure free and heading towards the 8 months! 🙂
